Shirlaws was founded back in 1928 by Leslie B Shirlaw who started the business by selling second hand motorcycles at premises in Catherine Street, Aberdeen.
His son, Leslie G Shirlaw, trained as a motorcycle mechanic in 1947 with George Cheyne Motorcycles in Aberdeen. After National Service Leslie and his wife Babs joined his father's business (Shirlaw's Garage) at Princes Street, Aberdeen. 1985 saw the sad and untimely death of Les. Up until that time he was completely devoted to the business and indeed was the architect of its steady development and expansion. He was a man of great energy and this proved by his involvement in all aspects of 'motorcycling life'. Babs can still be seen helping out at the shop today .
Les's son, Roy joined the business in 1971, he initially trained as a mechanic. Thereafter he obtained a full working knowledge of all aspects of the company, working in the parts, sales and financial sides of the business and is now Managing Director of the business.
Roy's daughter Dawn joined the company in 2006 assisting in the sales office. In 2009 she was appointed office manager and deals with all aspects of sales admin and finance. Roy's son Craig also joined the team in 2007 briefly as a mechanic and is now a key member of the sales team. Craig competes in road racing and was runner up at East Fortune. He was recently awarded the 'visitors award - quickest non Irish rider' at the Mid-Antrim road races in 2009. Craig will be competing in the Irish Road Races in 2010.
